Jangan Lewatkan

Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia’s president-elect for the 2024-2029 term, is expected to enhance Indonesia’s global influence significantly when he assumes office. The Straits Times, a leading media outlet in Singapore, recently published an article titled “Prabowo has big plans for Indonesia on the global stage”, highlighting the proactive foreign policy agenda that is anticipated under Prabowo’s leadership.

The article emphasized that even before officially becoming president, Prabowo has been actively engaging in diplomatic visits to over 10 countries, including major global powers like China, Japan, Russia, and Australia. This proactive approach has led experts and citizens to believe that Prabowo is already positioning himself as Indonesia’s de facto foreign minister.

Citizens of Indonesia have expressed optimism about Prabowo’s presidency, believing that he will prioritize advancing Indonesia’s role in global diplomacy. Many expect Prabowo to strengthen communication between Indonesia and other nations, potentially serving as a mediator in conflict resolution efforts.

Prabowo’s recent diplomatic engagements, both as the current Minister of Defense and as Indonesia’s future president, demonstrate his strong commitment to international affairs. For instance, his involvement in the Israel-Palestine conflict, where he criticized Western nations, showcases his dedication to addressing global conflicts.

Additionally, Prabowo has made headlines by offering humanitarian support to Palestine, such as pledging to evacuate 1,000 patients from Gaza to Indonesia and providing educational opportunities to Palestinian children in East Java.

Julia Lau, a senior fellow at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore, mentioned that Prabowo is expected to play a more assertive role in shaping Indonesia’s foreign policy. However, she highlighted the importance of having a competent Ministry of Foreign Affairs to implement Prabowo’s ambitious vision successfully.

While there is optimism surrounding Prabowo’s presidency, The Straits Times article pointed out that the Indonesian public is cautiously hopeful, waiting to see if Prabowo will fulfill his campaign promises and take concrete action to address critics’ concerns.

As Prabowo gears up to assume office, there is keen interest in how he will position Indonesia on the global stage, particularly in addressing key geopolitical challenges and advancing the nation’s interests in an increasingly interconnected world. (RR)
