The National Nutrition Agency (Badan Gizi Nasional, BGN) is pushing for the integration of nutrition education into Indonesia’s national school curriculum. This initiative aims to develop healthy, knowledgeable, and globally competitive generations. According to Ikeu Tanziha from BGN’s Nutrition Expert Council, structured nutrition education in schools is essential for laying a strong foundation of nutritional understanding at a young age.
Nutrition education goes beyond just food; it shapes the future. Children who are well-versed in nutrition are more likely to grow up healthy, think critically, and contribute positively to society. Schools are seen as the ideal platform to systematically teach students about nutrition, helping them understand the connection between food, health, and overall well-being.
The proposed curriculum covers topics like basic nutrition concepts, food group classification, nutrient functions, and the consequences of unhealthy eating habits. By educating students about nutrition, they become more aware of the significance of a balanced diet and are empowered to make informed dietary choices, thereby preventing diet-related illnesses like obesity and diabetes.

BGN urges all stakeholders, including government agencies, schools, parents, media, and the general public, to support the integration of nutrition education into the school curriculum as part of the nation’s effort to realize Indonesia’s Golden Generation 2045. According to Ikeu, the Free Nutritious Meals Program will be most effective when accompanied by comprehensive nutrition education that resonates with society at all levels.
