Indonesia commemorates its 80th Independence Day on August 8, 2025, not just as a ceremonial event, but as a reflection of the country’s fundamental values. True independence is not only about breaking free from colonial rule, but also about overcoming issues such as hunger, ignorance, and underdevelopment.
In line with this ethos, the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program was introduced, symbolizing a concrete form of independence in terms of nutrition. More than a mere food assistance program, MBG serves as an investment in Indonesia’s future, particularly in the health and potential of its children.
The Deputy for Dissemination and Media Information, Noudhy Valdryno, commonly known as Ryno, highlighted the significance of MBG in providing nutritious meals to millions of schoolchildren, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and toddlers nationwide. This initiative not only enhances children’s academic performance and concentration but also supports their physical and cognitive development.
Recognized as a long-term investment with substantial benefits, MBG has garnered praise from international organizations such as the School Meals Coalition. With eight million beneficiaries to date, including students from early childhood education centers to high schools, pregnant women, and toddlers, MBG has showcased tangible improvements in various regions.
Expert Ikeu Tanziha from the National Nutrition Council (BGN) noted the positive impact of MBG, citing improvements in children’s Body Mass Index (BMI) in several areas. Moreover, the program has enhanced classroom focus and cognitive abilities, as evidenced by research conducted in Bogor and Papua.
Apart from its health and educational outcomes, MBG has also stimulated economic growth by creating job opportunities in the Nutritional Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG) kitchens and empowering local businesses that provide ingredients. For instance, Suratina, a 63-year-old grandmother working in a SPPG kitchen in Yogyakarta Special Region, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work and the relationships forged in the kitchen.
MBG not only addresses nutritional needs but also fosters economic development and community engagement, embodying Indonesia’s commitment to a prosperous and healthy future for all its citizens.
